New Forms of Storytelling

September 15, 2020

One of my favorite examples of storytelling lies in Casey Neistat, specifically the op-docs he did for the New York Times around 7 years ago. While this is similar to the short videos/explainers mentioned in the article, this differs in that Casey actually goes out and films everything for himself. This creates a more authentic feeling, as it’s not something from a stock photo/video, and helps the viewer see what he’s doing first-hand.

Citizen Journalism

September 15, 2020

I think citizen journalism can be helpful to traditional journalists. Of course, there’s the normal stuff that was already said, like how people on the scene can take videos and photos and share them with the press, who can then distribute the photos. I really enjoyed listening to “Podcast Pioneers.” At first, I wasn’t really sure what to think of it, since I’m surprisingly used to listening to American voices in my podcasts. The cover image was also interesting and seemed somewhat candid, rather than something more professional with a logo. It had quite a bit of fun and novel information, though. The way they presented it worked well, too. They had a bit of a story in introducing how podcasts got their start, and then went on to describe the different podcasting scenes around the world. Having the listener listen to those different podcasts themselves helps show how there isn’t much difference in podcast quality, even between developing countries and the US. Everything produced is still high quality. I also liked how they went through their own podcast playlists and talked about their contents, how long they are, when they listen to them, which helped show off the range of content podcasts can be, even with a small selection. I already listen to Hardcore History, but the other ones played, like Limetown, also managed to pique my interest. I also like how they weaved interviews with podcast hosts between audio clips, which helped add to the story of their podcast, and of starting podcasts in general. From listening to the podcast, I got the sense that podcasts are still evolving in terms of the genres and creativity people express in them.
